The next few days were spent in and around the Volcano Park, walking across a recent lava field to view live hillside lava flows from the same volcano up close and personal!

And hiking underground into a vast lava tube to see how the volcanic lava moved around and created the landscape. In our ignorance, we just thought lava was lava! Philip’s extensive knowledge helped bring the landscape to life and understand the creation of Hawai’i Island.

We got hikes through tropical rainforests, including one through Waipio Valley to see a huge and magnificent waterfall down the valley side. We got to the top of Mauna Kea to enjoy a superb sunset over the Pacific and some unbelievable stargazing .

And in between all that we managed snorkelling, a trip in an authentic Hawaiian canoe, watching dolphins and green sea turtles, swimming from yellow, green and black sand beaches.
