Kilauea’s fertile slopes of Puna, the meeting of lava, humans and jungle.
Summary: The human, agriculture and jungle-covered Puna district on the southeastern slopes of Hawai’i Island is cut by Kilauea’s east rift zone, an ever-present volcanic threat to a quickly developing region that has already lost two communities to lava within the last 50 years. The fertile volcanic soil has cultivated an impressive display of vegetation to go along with a striking coastline, isolated beaches, and the ever-present historic lava flows.
