Kohala’s Hamakua coast rounds ‘Upolu point into the oasis-filled deserts of Kona.
Summary: Lava flows from Kohala, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes reach the northwest coast of Hawai’i Island, the mountains themselves creating a rainshadow for the island’s leeward Kona coast. Springwaters rise near beaches in a string of oases across the lava desert, some developed into megaresorts and some still pleasantly pristine in the presence of Hawaiian ruins.Points of interest: Pololu, Honokane Nui and Honokane Iki beaches, Keokea beach, Kapa’au and Hawi villages, Mo’okini heiau, Kapa’a beach, Mahukona beach, Lapakahi State Park, Spencer beach, Kawaihae village, Pu’u Kohola heiau, Mau’umae beach, Kauna’oa beach, Hapuna beach, 69s beach, megaresorts, Puako bay, ‘Anaeho’omalu beach, Ke-awa-Iki beach and Kiholo bay.
Trails: 2 to 15 miles roundtrip, moderate to challenging.
