DestinationsTags: active eruption, boat charter, hawaiian canoe, hiking, historic eruption, lava, national park, ocean, ruins
The south slope of Kilauea, where Pele’s lava flows meet the ocean.
Summary: Located partly within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, active and recent lava flows cover the coastal plain of Kilauea, growing the island while encroaching on civilization. Whether by land, sea or air, to witness active lava is an unmatchable experience every time, when the volcano goddess Pele, the conditions and the authorities allow.
Points of interest: Active lava viewing area, active lava flows and ocean entry (when accessible), recent lava flows and ocean entries, Kaimu and Kalapana villages, new Kaimu beach, old Kalapana Gardens and Royal Gardens community remains.
Trails: 1-8 miles round-trip over uneven lava, moderate to challenging (we recommend boots and pants and will provide any other protective gear as needed).
Tour options: Half-day minimum, up to 4 full hiking days for in-depth exploration (as conditions allow). We can also assist in booking independent charter boats, especially for lava viewing (charter costs apply).
