Kailua town, nestled beneath Hualalai volcano, a center for ocean activities.
Summary: Sunny Kailua is the center of a growing bustle on Hawai’i Island’s leeward side. Kona is a realm of white sandy beaches and ocean sunsets, of crystal clear waters and abundant marine life, and of recent lava flows. South Kona, on the western slope of Mauna Loa volcano, is a little farther from civilization and offers unequaled marine and hawaiian cultural experiences.
Points of interest: Kailua town, Makalawena beach, Kona Coast State Park, Ke Kahakai State Park, Kua beach, Hawai’i Natural Energy Lab, lava flows of Hualalai volcano, Kahalu’u beach, Magic Sands beach, Ahuena heiau, Keauhou bay, Honokohau beach, Kealakekua bay, Honaunau bay, Pu’u Honua O Honaunau, Ho’okena beach and Miloli’i beach.
Trails: 1 to 10 miles roundtrip, easy to challenging.
